About Us

Bruce and Chris were married in 1977 and have three adult children and two grandsons, Jordan and Marshall and granddaughter, Zoe.  We live in the house that Bruce built in the northern suburbs of Hobart - the capital of Tasmania, the island state of Australia.

Bruce worked as a Senior Technician at WIN TV in Hobart until  December 2002 when he was made redundant.    He has a talent for art and was looking forward to retirement in a few years so he could spend his days painting, drawing and making model ships.   Since  his "retirement" he has been building up a home-based business dubbing standard 8, super 8 and 16mm film to VCR and DVD.  He is also doing some screen printing, as well as casual work at international and national sporting events in Hobart.

Chris is currently working as a temporary admin/clerical/legal secretary through an employment agency in Hobart.  Previous jobs have included work as an audio transcription typist and administration officer for Swimming Tasmania.  She has a passion for genealogy and Tasmanian history and in February 2004 self-published a book, "The Last Ladies" about the lives of the female convicts on the Duchess of Northumberland”.  Her current projects include researching the last convict ship of men to arrive in Tasmania as well as the convicts who spent time in the Insane/Lunatic Asylums in Tasmania.

Bruce's Family History

Bruce's father, Lynn Norton Woods, was born in Victoria.  Lynn's parents were born in South Australia. Parts of Bruce's family history research is still in the "bare bones" stage until we can make a personal visit to South Australia to continue the search for his family history.

Bruce's mother was born in Tasmania and her ancestry goes back to the "Calcutta" which brought the first ship load of male convicts to arrive in Tasmania and a second fleet convict from the "Neptune".  The maternal side of Bruce's family includes the names AVERY, GOLDSMITH, NEWMAN, SYDES, BARWICK.

Information on his particular ancestors will be added very soon.

If you are related to Bruce's family or have information to share, we would love to hear from you. The email address is at the bottom of the page.

Other Projects

Female convicts on the "Duchess of Northumberland" in April 1853.

Chris spent many years (on and off) researching the lives of the female convicts who arrived on the "Duchess of Northumberland" from England in April 1853.  In February 2004 she published the book, "The Last Ladies".

If you think you had an ancestor on the ship, check out the list of names:

If you want any more information on the book, please email me.

SNARE Family History

A number of years ago Chris wrote a booklet about her Snare family ancestry called "Snare, not a common name".  It is currently being updated.  If you are a descendant or have information about Robert and Martha (nee Barker) SNARE, I would love to hear from you.

ELLIS Family History

John Ellis arrived in Tasmania in July 1829 on board the convict ship, "Lady Harewood".
Maria Pugh (also known as Mary Pugh) arrived in Tasmania in June 1828 on board the convict ship, "Mermaid".

John and Maria were married in Tasmania in 1832.  They were Chris's great great great grandparents and she is gathering information about their lives for a future family history.

If you can help, please contact me.

HILL Family History

George Hill arrived in Tasmania in August 1833 on board the convict ship, "Atlas".  Ellen Singleton arrived in Tasmania as a free immigrant in 1835.

George and Ellen were married at New Norfolk in 1836.  They were Chris's great great great grandparents and she is gathering information about them for a proposed family history to be published after the Hill family gathering.
